The international protection pursuant to DIN 40 050 characterizes the type of protection for contact, alien body and water penetration. The respective degrees of protection may be taken from the following table. The international protection pursuant to DIN 40 050 is designated by the letters IP followed by a first and a second parameter (number) (eg IP 65).
First parameter | Degree of protection (contact and alien body penetration) |
0 | No special protection. |
1 | Protection against penetration of solid alien bodies with a diameter of larger than 50 mm (large alien bodies). |
2 | Protection against penetration of solid alien bodies with a diameter of larger than 12 mm (medium-sized alien bodies). |
3 | Protection against penetration of solid alien bodies with a diameter of larger than 2.5 mm (small alien bodies). |
4 | Protection against penetration of solid alien bodies with a diameter of larger than 1 mm (grain-size alien bodies). |
5 | Protection against damaging dust deposits. The penetration of dust is not completely prevented but the dust may notpenetrate in such amounts that the operation of the tool is impaired (protected against dust). |
6 | Protection against the penetration of dust (dust-tight). |
Second parameter | Degree of protection (protection against water) |
0 | No special protection. |
1 | Protection against water dripping vertically. |
2 | Protection against water dripping diagonally. |
3 | Protection against water falling at any angle up to 60o to the vertical (spray water). |
4 | Protection against water spraying against the encasing from all directions (splashes of water). |
5 | Protection against water issued from a jet, sprayed at the encasing from all directions (water jet). |
6 | Protection against heavy seas or a strong water jet. Water may not enter the encasing (flooding). |
7 | Protection against water when the encasing is immersed in water under certain pressure and time conditions (immersion). |
8 | The encasing is suitable for a permanent immersion in water at conditions to be described by the manufacturer. |
